The domain name is the first thing you need to get to have your website or your personalized email.

It serves to identify, find, and remember your space on the Internet.

A domain name is used to identify any device connected to the Internet more easily, compared to identifying them with an IP address.

An Internet address like http://www.mydomain.com.gt is divided into the following parts:
gt: First level [in this case the Guatemala ccTLD]
com: Second level
mydomain: Domain Name [Third level]
www: Machine name [in this case it is a Web server]
http://: Communication protocol

In summary, the domain name is only mydomain.com.gt, any other element to the left of this domain name identifies a machine.

For example, some machine names could be:
ns1.mydomain.com.gt
backup.management.mydomain.com.gt

From the above, everything in bold is outside the scope of the .gt Registry.

It is a domain name that is found directly under .gt

The .gt ending is the suffix or identifier that groups all the domain names inscribed in the name registry managed by the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG) and that corresponds to the country code designated for Guatemala by the InterNet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).

GT is the ISO 3166 code for the two-letter abbreviation for Guatemala.

No. Domain names ending in .gt can be seen from anywhere in the world. The .gt ending simply identifies that the said domain name is registered in the Republic of Guatemala.

The general policy for registering a domain name is first come, first served.

For restricted domain names (.edu.gt, .gob.gt, and .mil.gt), documentation proving the affiliation of your institution is requested to qualify for one of them.

* You must reliably prove belonging to the corresponding sector. ONLY ONE domain name will be delegated for free per institution. Any additional domain name will have the same rate as a .com.gt domain name.

To request a .gob.gt domain name, you must present the following paperwork:
1. Simple copy of the resolution of the creation of the government agency.
2. Simple copy of the appointment of the legal representative.
3. Simple copy of the DPI of the legal representative.

Note: The aforementioned documents can be delivered by: email to admin@cctld.gt or physically. By delivering the paperwork, the conditions and terms expressed in the Terms of Service, as well as the registration policies and dispute policy, are considered accepted.

To request a .edu.gt domain name, you must present the following paperwork:
1. Simple copy of the resolution that accredits the institution as educational. **
2. Simple copy of the appointment of the legal representative or director.
3. Simple copy of the DPI of the legal representative or director.

** Initial Education: Approval of the Secretariat of Social Welfare of the Presidency.
** Primary and Secondary: Approval of the Ministry of Education.
** Universities: Approval of the Council of Private Higher Education (CEPS).

The UVG signed an agreement with the Ministry of Defense for the administration of .mil.gt domain names. Starting in 2018, people interested in acquiring or updating .mil.gt domain names should contact:

There is no upper limit of years to renew your domain name.
The minimum to pay is one year.

There is no limit to the number of domain names that the same holder can register.

1. Administrative Contact: Person with the authority to request changes related to the organization to which the domain name has been delegated, the contacts, and/or the DNS servers.
2. Technical Contact: Person with the authority to request changes related to the DNS servers.
3. Billing Contact: Person who will receive the domain name renewal notifications.

Enter the domain name in the search engine, and when the results appear, select the domain name to see the registered information.

A DNS server is the one that indicates where all the information of your space on the internet is located, including website services, emails, and others. For this, it has a database in which the names of the machines with these services and their IP addresses are stored.

This server can be anywhere in the world. If your company does not have an IT department, you can hire a web hosting company.
help_outline What is web hosting? expand_more
Web hosting is a service provided by a company, through which they provide you space on a server to store the layout of a webpage (files, images, information, etc.) and/or have an email service, associating it to your domain name.
help_outline Does registering a .gt Domain Name include additional services like email and/or web hosting? expand_more
No. The .gt domain registry only associates the domain name to the DNS servers operated by the web hosting provider or the IT department of your company, and announces it to the world.
help_outline Can you recommend a reliable hosting provider? expand_more
The .gt Domain Registry does not provide recommendations, as there is no relationship with any hosting providers.
help_outline Must I have a webpage and/or hosting service to register a Domain Name? expand_more
No. To register a domain name, you only need to fill in the information of the holding entity and the three contacts: administrative, technical, and billing.

When you already have a hosting service, you can email us (admin@cctld.gt) the DNS details of your hosting to start announcing your domain name.

To register a domain name, you only need to fill in the information of the holding entity and the three contacts: administrative, technical, and billing.

When you have this information, you can send it by email (admin@cctld.gt) to add it to your domain name and start announcing it to the world.

help_outline Does the order of the DNSs (Domain Name Servers) affect the functioning of the Domain Name? expand_more
No. The order of the DNS (Domain Name Servers) in the .gt ccTLD Registry does not affect the functioning of the Domain Name. For name resolution purposes, which is the main function of the .gt ccTLD, all published DNSs are symmetric.

It is necessary that all registered DNSs have the same information, meaning that they are synchronized for better functioning.

An own DNS is one that has at the end of its name, the domain name to which it is being assigned.

For example: For the domain name mydomain.com.gt we could have the following DNSs:
ns1.mydomain.com.gt
ns2.mydomain.com.gt

For the resolution of the domain name, it is necessary to provide the .gt Domain Registry with the information of the public IP numbers that correspond to the own servers.

The information that appears on our website about the IP numbers of non-own DNSs is obtained through an instantaneous query to those servers.

The IP numbers of this type of servers are not stored, since they are not used by the .gt Registry for name resolution.

The replication begins at the top of the hour.
help_outline Which records can be configured in the .gt DNS? expand_more
The only records that can be configured in the .gt Registry DNS are:
1. NS: Where a domain name is associated with a DNS.
2. A: Where an IPv4 number is associated with a DNS, when they are own servers.
3. AAAA: Where an IPv6 number is associated with a DNS, when they are own servers.

You can reserve the correct domain name, if available.
The mistakenly reserved domain name will be automatically deleted after 4 calendar days.

Unfortunately, the process cannot be reversed. By making the payment, the conditions and terms expressed in the Terms of Service, as well as the registration policies and dispute policy, are considered accepted.

Processed payments are neither refundable nor transferable.
help_outline Can I modify the name of my already paid domain? expand_more
No. Our policies do not allow the modification of an already paid domain name.
If you want another domain name, you must carry out the corresponding registration and payment.

Yes, you can pay through Bi Banking, but you must send us a screenshot (ScreenShot or PrintScreen) where the authorization of the transaction appears by email (admin@cctld.gt) indicating the domain name to which the payment should be applied.
help_outline What can I do if I have problems when making a credit card payment from the site? expand_more
Clear your browser's cache [in the history section]. Then close the browser and open it again. Do not have more than one tab open with our website to make the payment.

If after doing this you still have problems, consult with your credit card issuer.
help_outline How many days do I have to pay for a reserved domain name? expand_more
You have 4 calendar days to pay for your reserved domain, otherwise, you will lose the reservation.
help_outline In how much time is a domain registered once the payment is made? expand_more
- If you pay with a credit card from our website, the registration is automatic and immediate.
- If you pay with a monetary deposit in the bank, the registration is made in a maximum of 4 business hours from the moment you send us the scanned receipt to the email: admin@cctld.gt.
- If you pay by electronic transfer, you must report the payment to us to the email (admin@cctld.gt). The registration is made at the moment the reception of the transfer is confirmed with the bank, this can take from 3 to 7 business days.

Enter the domain name in the search engine and when the results appear, select the domain name to see the registered information.
help_outline If my domain name has already expired, until when do I have the deadline to pay the renewal? expand_more
- You have 15 calendar days before the domain name is blocked.
- After the domain name has been blocked, you have 15 calendar days before the domain name is deleted.
We remind you that the minimum to pay is one year.

- Paid domain names can be renewed at any time.
- Domain names exempt from payment can be renewed starting 3 months before their expiration date.

No, this date is established the day the domain name registration is paid.

By paying a minimum of one year through any of the available payment methods.

Yes, by sending an email to admin@cctld.gt from the email of the registered administrative contact, or a letter signed and sealed by the Legal Representative, requesting the cancellation of the domain name. Upon receiving this request, we will proceed to cancel the delegation of your domain name.

After the domain name has been blocked, you have 15 calendar days before the domain name is deleted.

If the domain name is still available, you must go through the registration process on our website again. If it is not available, see more information here.

After the payment is applied in our system, the DNS servers begin to be announced at the nearest top of the hour, but the replication of the DNSs worldwide could take from 24 to 48 hours.
- If you pay with a credit card from our website, the registration is automatic and immediate.
- If you pay with a monetary deposit in the bank, the registration is made in a maximum of 4 business hours from the moment you send us the scanned receipt to the email: admin@cctld.gt.
- If you pay by electronic transfer, you must report the payment to us to the email (admin@cctld.gt). The registration is made at the moment the reception of the transfer is confirmed with the bank, this can take from 3 to 7 business days.

The UVG is exempt from paying taxes according to Art. 88 of the Political Constitution of the Republic, "Exemption of Taxes and Contributions", therefore, only a Cash Receipt can be issued.
help_outline How can I get my payment receipt? expand_more
The document will be automatically sent to the email addresses that are registered as the administrative contact and billing contact of the domain name. You do not need to take any additional actions. However, if you do not receive the receipt within a maximum of 48 hours, we recommend that you check your spam or junk folder. If you still cannot find the receipt, please contact us directly at admin@cctld.gt.

The UVG, in its capacity as the Internet Domain Name Registry of the .gt ccTLD, is not authorized and cannot evaluate, review, or investigate the right that each applicant/holder has to use or register each domain name in the .gt ccTLD.

For this reason, the UVG, as part of the Internet Domain Name system, has adopted the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy approved by ICANN.

ICANN has a list of Arbitration and Mediation Centers authorized to administer disputes related to Internet domain name registrations. Of these, due to the ease they have working in the Spanish language, the UVG has made arrangements with WIPO to be its Arbitration and Mediation Center to handle disputes arising within the .gt ccTLD Internet domain, see our dispute policy.

"IDNs are domain names represented in local language characters (characters that are not ASCII). Such domain names may contain characters with diacritical marks required by many European languages, or characters of non-Latin scripts; (for example, Arabic, or Chinese). " *

In the case of the .gt ccTLD domains, the following letters of the Spanish language are allowed for domain names: á, é, í, ó, ú, ü and ñ

To register an IDN, write it as it is in Spanish at the moment of checking its availability.

In the case of Guatemala, the importance lies in the correct spelling of the Spanish language.
Having the domain name pinacolada.com.gt is completely different from having piñacolada.com.gt.

Internationalized domain names have greater application for browsing websites, since almost all internet browsers handle them correctly. On the contrary, most email clients still do not handle this new encoding well.

Therefore, it is recommended to have an ASCII (traditional) domain name, for email.

"ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is a common numerical code for computers and other equipment that work with text. Computers can only interpret numbers, therefore the ASCII code is the numerical representation of a character, such as a, @, etc. When referring to ASCII TLDs or ASCII domain names, it refers to the fact that prior to internationalization, in domain names only the following sets were accepted: "*

"This is the sequence of ASCII characters in which all IDNs will be encoded so that the Domain Name System (DNS) understands and handles these names. The intention is that those registering domain names and the users never see this decoded form of a domain name. The only purpose it has is so that the DNS can resolve, for example, web addresses that contain local characters. The DNS can only handle ASCII characters." *

For example, for the domain name piñacolada.com.gt the punycode version is xn--piacolada-m6a.com.gt.

"The prefix of a Punycode version of domain names is always xn--. Therefore, this prefix is strictly reserved for top-level domain registries to prevent confusion in the event that IDNs are registered." *
